Ocean noise must be treated as a core environmental challenge

The OCEANOISE2026 Declaration calls for immediate action on human-generated underwater noise — a message that aligns closely with LowNoiser’s mission to make maritime operations quieter and more sustainable.

Released on World Ocean Day 2026, the OCEANOISE2026 Declaration underlines that ocean noise can no longer be treated as a secondary environmental issue. For shipping, offshore activities and emerging ocean industries, acoustic impact must be considered as a central part of sustainable ocean management.

Sound is essential to life below water. Marine species depend on sound to communicate, navigate, find food and maintain healthy ecosystems. Yet human-generated underwater noise is still often overlooked in planning, design and operations at sea.

The declaration calls on governments, regulators, technology developers and industry leaders to integrate acoustic considerations early, apply precaution to emerging technologies and adopt ecosystem-based approaches to managing underwater noise.

LowNoiser supports this call for action. The project works to make underwater noise measurable, manageable and reducible across maritime operations — helping the sector move from awareness to practical implementation.

As the declaration states, what cannot be quantified cannot be effectively managed. The technologies and knowledge needed to reduce ocean noise already exist. The next step is to scale solutions across the maritime sector.
